Päivätär (literally “Daughter of the Sun” or “The Sun-Maiden”) is the dazzling, radiant goddess of light, daytime, and weaving in the Kalevala and Finnish mythology.

She represents the supreme beauty of the sky, the warmth of the summer sun, and the meticulous, creative energy of fate. Along with her sister Kuu-neiti (the Moon-Maiden), she presides over the celestial spheres.

Päivätär is famously depicted sitting on the edge of a brilliant summer cloud, a rainbow, or the high dome of the sky. She is an eternal, beautiful maiden who spends her days spinning golden threads and weaving the fabric of sunlight.

The rays of light filtering down to the earth are envisioned as the very threads slipping through her fingers.

In folk magic, her weaving is also tied to the concept of fate, spinning the bright days and seasons into existence.
