The Cosmic Mother: Ilmatar
As the Goddess of the Air, Ilmatar is the one who descends to the primordial sea, offers her knee for the cosmic duck to nest upon, and carries Väinämöinen in her womb for thirty long years while she shapes the shores, islands, and ocean depths. Väinämöinen is literally born from the womb of the sky and the sea.
The Grand Birth of Väinämöinen
Because Väinämöinen spends three decades inside his mother, Ilmatar, floating on the primeval waves, he is already born as an ancient, wise old man possessing the memories of the dawn of time. He grows restless in the dark womb, prays to the sun, moon, and stars for freedom, and finally presses his way out into the ocean, swimming to the shore to plant the first trees and bring order to the world.
