In the Kalevala, when heroes or herders pray for the protection of their cattle or the melting of the ice, they call upon her:
“Etelätär, eukko vanha, luonnotar, valio vaimo… Puhalla puhuri lämmin, saata sateet kultaiset…” (Etelätär, ancient mother, spirit of nature… Blow a warm breeze, bring down the golden rains…)
She is the ultimate symbol of warmth, gentleness, and renewal.
