Marjatta, a chaste maiden who becomes pregnant from a lingonberry. Her son is the new King of Kalevala. The old hero Väinämöinen is determined to drive away mother and son. After knowing that everyone thought they were innocent, he gets very angry and leaves Kalevala. This is a metaphor for the conversion of the original polytheistic faith of the Finnish people to Christianity. The child disappears after born. Marjatta looks for him and finds him in the wetlands. The text in the painting is the verses of the stars and the moon answering her when she is asking them where is her son.
